Zara's Quilt Finished!

 



 

 

Yes!  I finally finished Zara's quilt.  It turned out beautiful, just the way I wanted it. Love it, love it, love it.

It is the great combination of pretty fabrics, prints, colors, background and design that makes it so special.  So girly yet bright, colorful and playful.  I love the front as much as the back as well.  If you want to see how this quilt came to life, check out some of my previous posts:

¡Sí!  Finalmente terminé la colcha de Zara.  Esta preciosa, justo lo que yo deseaba.  ¡La amo, la amo, la amo!

In my last post I forgot to mention that I got a new sewing machine.  I purchased a Laura Ashley LA660 from Brother.  This is my first quilting machine ever - yes, that's right, my first.  After many hours of research, I selected this machine as a step towards a future commitment. I'll explain why.. it is a test to see if I like machine quilting as much as hand quilting.  If I do, then I will go for my dream machine, but at the moment I am still not sure whether it's worth committing to the expense of what my dream costs.

En mi última entrada se me olvido mencionar que compré una nueva máquina de coser, una Laura Ashley LA660 de Brother.  Esta es my primera máquina de hacer acolchonado, si mi primera. Después de varias horas de investigar y tratar de tomar una decisión, seleccione esta maquina básicamente como un paso a un compromiso futuro.  Me explico, estoy poniendo a prueba si me gusta el acolchonado a máquina tanto como me gusta el hecho a mano.  De gustarme, procederé a comprarme la máquina de mis sueños, pero al momento no estoy dispuesta a pagar lo que mi sueño cuesta.

 

So far, I have made two quilts with this machine, the Chevron and Zara's.  It is certainly a different experience, faster for sure, but I still need some time to say I love it.  New sewing machines are different from what they were 20 years ago when I got my Bernina.  They are now electronic with all kinds of gadgets, but they are also very sensitive. I getting used to it, but slowly!

Hasta el momento he cosido dos colchas con esta máquina, el Chevron Quilt y este de Zara.  Coser en ella es definitivamente diferente, los resultados son mas rápidos, pero aun necesito tiempo para decir que me encanta.  Las nuevas maquinas de coser han cambiando muchísimo desde que me compre mi Bernina hace 20 años atrás.  Las de hoy son electrónicas con nuevos mecanismos, pero también son muy sensitivas.  Me estoy acostumbrando a ella lentamente.

Chevron Quilt Tutorial

I wanted to do a chevron quilt and decided to make it using solid cotton fabrics from the Robert Kaufman Kona collection.  I selected some colors from my stash, ran to get others at the local shop, and proceeded to do all the cutting.

Of each color, I got 3/8 of a yard of fabric and I used about 1 1/2 yards of white for the blocks (front), the border (cut on a bias), and the back pieces.  The final size of this baby quilt is about 32 x 52 inches, perfect to cover the top of a standard crib size mattress.

Quería hacer una colcha con diseño de "chevron" y decidí hacerlo usando colores sólidos de la colección de Robert Kaufman.  Seleccioné algunos colores que ya tenía, corrí a la tienda a comprar otros y procedí a cortar todas la piezas.

De cada color utilice 3/8 de yarda y como 1 1/2 de la tela de color blanco para los bloques, el borde (en corte sesgado) y para las piezas de la parte de atrás.  El tamaño final de esta colcha o "quilt" es de 32 X 52 pulgadas, perfecto para cubrir como sobrecama el colchón de la cuna del bebe.

If you decided to try to make this quilt, make sure to cut the stripe pieces for the back first and cut the squares to form the blocks with the remaining fabric.

·         For the stripes (bands of the back side), cut a piece 8 1/2" long x 36" wide of each color (this will allow 2 inches of excess on each side).
·         The white ones will be 2, 5 1/2 inches long (includes the excess).
·         Once you have all the pieces from the back done, cut eight 5" squares of each of the six colors (48 pieces) and 48 pieces of the white fabric for a total of 96 square pieces in total.
·         You will also need 16 pieces of the white fabric 4 1/2" X 2 1/2" for the top and bottom rectangles of the front side(see pictures).

Si vas a intentar hacer este "quilt" asegúrate de que cortas las bandas de la parte trasera primero.  Luego corta las piezas de los bloques delanteros con la tela restante.

·         Para las bandas de la parte trasera necesitas una pieza 8 1/2" de largo por 26" de ancho de cada color (esta medida te permitirá tener un exceso de 2 pulgadas a cada lado).
·         Del color blanco necesitas dos piezas de  5 1/2" de largo (incluyen el exceso).
·         Una vez esa pieza este cortada, corta ocho piezas cuadradas de 5" de los seis colores (48 piezas) y 48 piezas de la tela blanca para 96 piezas en total. 
·         Además, vas a necesitar 16 piezas rectangulares 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 pulgadas para los rectángulos de arriba y abajo de la parte delantera (mira las fotos).

This quilt never made it to my Etsy shop, a friend got it for her baby boy. It certainly was a fun quilt to make!

A Baby Shower Present!

 



Someone I know is having a baby and I wanted to say welcome with a simple quilt.  I had no clue of the decor style for the baby nursery room, but I  knew the colors: baby pink, light lavender and brown.

Alguien que conozco va a tener un bebe y quise darle la bienvenida con una colchita sencilla.  Yo no sabía el estilo de decoración que se va a usar en el cuarto del bebe, pero sabia los clores: rosa bebe, lavanda claro y marón.

 

 

I decided to make a simple quilt that will go with any theme or style using the "mom to be" selected colors. Light tones of pink and lavender were used on the front.  For the back, I selected a modern geometric print in a light brown that coordinated with the large floral I got for the border. Perfect!

Decidí hacer una colcha sencilla que se vea bien con cualquier tema o estilo utilizando los colores escogidos por la  "a ser mama".  Utilicé tonos claros de rosado y lavanda para la parte frontal de la colcha.  Para la parte de atrás seleccione un moderno estampado geométrico que coordinara con la tela utilizada en el borde, flores de gran formato.  Perfecto.



 

 

To hold the quilt sandwich together, large stitch hand quilting with crochet yarn in a dark beige.

Para aguantar el sándwich del endredón, utilice grandes puntadas hechas a mano con hilo de crochet de color crema oscuro. 

 





The outcome: an adorable newborn size quilt, the perfect baby shower gift!

My Daughter's Hexagon Quilt

 



It's finally here, my daughter's quilt.   After writing so much about it and many months of waiting to see the final result, It's finally finish!   I am so happy!   But the most important is that my daughter love it!

El "quilt" de mi hija finalmente esta aquí.  Tras haber escrito tanto sobre él y muchos meses de espera para ver el resultado final, ya finalmente lo termine.  !Estoy muy feliz!  !Lo mas importante es que a ella lo adoró!

 



 

The colors used are aqua, turquoise, dark mint, white, different tones of gray and greens with modern prints like chevron, stripes, dots, organic shapes and floral, all together creating a scrappy effect. Perfect! This piece is hand quilted. For the wide stripe of gray I used crochet yarn on the quilting.

Los colores son aqua, turquesa, menta obscuro, blanco y diferentes tonos de gris y verdes con estampados modernos como los chevron, rayas, puntos, formas orgánicas, y flores, todos juntos para formar un efecto de sobrantes. Perfecto.  Esta pieza esta acolchonada a mano. En la franja gris utilice hilo de ganchillo (crochet).

 

I took so many pictures it was hard to select the favorites, but I give it a try! Enjoy!

Handkerchiefs

Last week I had a special order of linen handkerchiefs with a simple crochet stitch.  I prepared 4 pieces with this color scheme of white, black and fuchsia pink.

Here is the result!

My customer was very happy with the result and that is very important for me.

Zara's Quilt

 

 

I am working on a quilt that I love. It is for a beautiful little girl named Zara. She is my nephew's daughter and is only 18 months old.

I love this picture of them together.

Estoy trabajando en una colcha que adoro.  Es para una preciosa niña llamada Zara.  Es la hija de mi sobrino y tiene 18 meses de nacida.

I selected about 20 different low volume prints to contrast the color "Snow" of the Kona Cotton Solid fabric collection, which is like a light ivory or winter white tone. Within the prints I selected, there are floral and geometric shapes with colors like red, pink, mint, aqua, blue, lilac and yellow, all with ivory backgrounds to match the solid fabric. Like I do in all of my work, I used 100% premium cotton fabrics and 100% batting.

Seleccioné unas 20 telas de diferentes colecciones para usar con el color solido llamado Nieve o "snow" de la colección de sólidos Kona de Robert Kauffman, el cual es un blanco cremoso al que se conoce como blanco de invierno.  Entre los estampados seleccione flores y geométricos de colores rojo, rosa, menta, aqua, azul, lila y amarillo, todos con el fondo cremoso para coordinar con la tela de color solido.  Como en todo mis trabajos seleccione telas de muy buena calidad 100% algodón y su relleno también de 100% algodón.

Zara's room is literally a playground with selected multicolored pieces. I selected a wide pinwheel pattern to continue with the playful theme of her room........... and pink to make it girly....... of course!

La habitación de Zara es literalmente un parque de juegos con seleccionadas piezas de varios colores.  !Escogí utilizar el patrón de molinos de viento para darle continuidad al tema del juego..............y tonos rosado para darle un toque femenino, claro está!

 

I just finished putting together the top of the quilt! I will soon start with the hand-quilting process.

Acabo de terminar la pieza del centro de la parte superior de la colcha y ya pronto comenzaré con el proceso de acolchado a mano.
